Reducer production – forming and dimensional check

Concentric Reducer

A concentric reducer has a symmetrical cone shape with the centerlines of both ends aligned. It is used to connect pipes of different diameters while maintaining a smooth, centered flow path. Concentric reducers are ideal for vertical pipelines and applications where gas accumulation is a concern. They are commonly specified in ASME B16.9 for butt weld connections, available in sizes from 1/2″ to 24″ NPS, in pressure ratings matching the parent pipe.

Eccentric Reducer

An eccentric reducer has one flat side, keeping either the top or bottom pipe edge straight. This design prevents liquid accumulation (low point pick-up) in horizontal suction pipelines and prevents gas trapping in discharge lines. Flat side down is used for pump suction lines to prevent cavitation; flat side up is used for gravity drainage systems to prevent pooling. Available in carbon steel (A234 WPB), stainless steel (A403 WP304/316), and alloy steel grades.

Reducer Types by Connection

  • Butt Weld Reducers: Per ASME B16.9, most common for high-pressure industrial piping
  • Socket Weld Reducers: Per ASME B16.11, for small-bore high-pressure lines (NPS 2″ and below)
  • Threaded Reducers: Per ASME B16.11, NPT/BSP threads, for low-pressure and instrument lines
  • Seamless Reducers: Produced from seamless pipe, no weld joint, highest integrity
  • Forged Reducers: Manufactured from forged blanks, superior grain structure and mechanical properties

Reducer Materials

  • Carbon Steel: A234 WPB, A420 WPL6 (low temperature), Q235, Q345, 10#, 20#, 16Mn
  • Stainless Steel: A403 WP304, WP304L, WP316, WP316L, WP321, WP310S
  • Alloy Steel: A234 WP11, WP22, WP5, WP91 (for high-temperature service)
  • Special Alloys: Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, Monel, Inconel (on request)

Reducer Standards

  • ASME B16.9 — Wrought Steel Butt-Welding Fittings (concentric & eccentric)
  • ASME B16.28 — Wrought Steel Butt-Welding Short Radius Elbows and Returnings (SWR)
  • ASME B16.11 — Forged Steel Fittings, Socket-Welding and Threaded (socket weld & threaded)
  • DIN 2605 / EN 10253 — European butt weld reducers
  • JIS B2312 — Japanese steel pipe reducers

Applications

Reducers are essential in virtually every industrial piping system: oil and gas pipelines, refining and petrochemical plants, power generation (thermal and nuclear), marine and offshore platforms, water and wastewater treatment, HVAC systems, and structural piping. Proper reducer selection prevents flow turbulence, pressure drop, and erosion in piping systems.

Quality Control & Certifications

All reducers are manufactured under ISO 9001 quality management system. Each batch comes with Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 Type 3.1. We support third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, and other recognized agencies. Surface treatment: anti-rust oil, painting, or bare as specified.

Build a complete reducer specification

A reducer inquiry should identify both ends of the connection. Send the large-end and small-end sizes together with the required geometry and installation drawing so the quotation can be checked against the actual line.

Order detailWhat to provide
Both end sizesList large-end and small-end nominal sizes, outside diameters and wall thicknesses. Identify different wall requirements at the two ends.
Concentric or eccentricSpecify the required type. For an eccentric reducer, show the offset and orientation on the drawing.
Length and end preparationState the required overall length, dimensional standard and weld-end preparation. Mark fixed tie-in dimensions.
Material and documentsProvide the material specification and grade, manufacturing requirements, inspection scope and certificate requirements.

Before you order

For equipment connections, include the equipment nozzle information and approved piping arrangement. Reducer orientation should follow the engineering design for the service rather than a general rule applied to every installation.

Can I request a reducer using only the larger pipe size?

Please provide both end sizes. The smaller end, length, geometry and wall requirements are needed to identify the component and review its fit.

Custom reducer manufacturing

Reducers are frequently the fitting that has to be adapted: the large end and small end come from different pipe schedules or different materials. We make reducers to order so both ends match the lines they join.

  • Both ends to your pipe specification – large-end and small-end sizes, wall thicknesses and materials can differ
  • Concentric or eccentric – with the offset orientation shown on the drawing
  • Fabricated construction – for large diameters or non-standard lengths where a seamless reducer is not available
  • Material options – A234 WPB, A420 WPL6, A403 stainless, alloy steel
  • OEM marking and documents – size pair stamps, heat numbers, EN 10204 3.1 certificate

Reducer Fittings – Names & Terminology

Search terms for this fitting vary by trade and region: pipe reducer, reducer fitting, line reducer, concentric/eccentric reducer (the two geometries), size reducer, and in piping drawings simply “reducer” with the size pair (8″x6″). Related small-size fittings are swages – threaded or welded, for instrument and drain connections below 2″. All welded reducers on this page are ASME B16.9; swages per MSS SP-95 on request.

How to Order a Reducer Correctly

State five things: 1) large end x small end size (NPS or DN), 2) concentric or eccentric, 3) schedule (both ends – they can differ when mating pipes differ), 4) material (A234 WPB / A420 WPL6 / A403 stainless), 5) standard (B16.9 / DIN 2616 / GB/T 12459). Example: “Reducer 8″x6″ ecc, SCH80 x SCH80, A234 WPB, B16.9”. That complete line gets an exact quote in hours – missing schedule or geometry is what delays RFQs.

Note: electrical “reducers”, fever/cost reducers and similar search hits are unrelated products – this page covers only steel pipe reducers. See also the eccentric reducer page for orientation rules.
