What Is a Pipe Tee?

A pipe tee is a T-shaped fitting that combines two flows or splits one flow into two: a straight run with a branch at 90°. It is a 3-way connector – and with a second branch, the fitting family extends to 4-way crosses. Tees are made by welding (butt weld per ASME B16.9), threading (small plumbing sizes) or socket welding; this guide focuses on welded steel tees for industrial piping.

3-Way vs 4-Way Tee Connectors

Every standard tee is a 3-way connector. The 4-way version – the cross – has two opposed branches: useful where a header must serve both sides (a sprinkler riser feeding cross-mains, or a balance line connecting two parallel circuits at one point). Crosses are costlier than tees (more weld ends, heavier center) and many designers replace them with two tees plus a spacer where the layout allows – unless space or weld count argues for the single cross.

“Black pipe tee” is the trade name for uncoated carbon steel tee – A234 WPB, the standard for water, oil, gas, steam and fire protection mains. Stainless A403 WP304L/316L tees serve corrosive and sanitary systems. For water pipelines specifically: carbon steel with corrosion allowance is the buried-mains standard; stainless for treatment plants and chlorinated loops. PVC, PEX and poly tees belong to residential plumbing – outside welded industrial scope.

FAQs

What is the difference between a tee and a cross? A tee has one branch (3-way); a cross has two opposed branches (4-way). Crosses cost more and see narrower use.

Can a reducing tee branch be much smaller than the run? Yes – but below roughly half the run size, a branch-outlet fitting (weldolet-style) is usually more economical.

What does “barred” mean on a tee? Welded bars across the branch keep a pipeline pig inside the main run – standard on pigged lines with branch connections.
