Applications of 45 Degree Elbows

45° elbows make gentle direction changes: offsetting a line around beams, aligning with equipment nozzles, building Z-shaped offsets (two 45s with a spacer), and gradual grade changes in gravity lines where sharp turns would trap solids. Because the flow turns only 45°, pressure drop is roughly half that of a 90° elbow – useful on long runs and pump discharge lines.

45° vs 90° Elbow – When to Use Which

Use 45° for offsets, gradual alignment and erosion-sensitive service (slurries, two-phase flow). Use 90° elbows for right-angle turns. A common combination: two 45° elbows with a spool piece create a lateral offset that no single fitting can achieve.

FAQs

What is the take-out for a 45° elbow? Approximately 0.414 x NPS for LR fittings – welders use this value to cut pipe length for an offset. Exact values are in ASME B16.9 dimension tables.

Are 45° elbows available in short radius? 45° elbows are made in long radius only per B16.9 – the SR designation applies to 90° fittings.
