Applications of 90 Degree Elbows

The 90° elbow is the workhorse of pipe routing: it turns flow around obstacles, connects horizontal runs to vertical risers, and corners piping racks. Long radius (LR, R=1.5D) is the default for process lines – lower pressure drop and erosion. Short radius (SR, R=1D) fits tight clearances in skids and structural constraints where space outweighs pressure loss.

How to Choose LR vs SR for a 90° Elbow

Choose LR when: the line carries abrasive or high-velocity media, pressure drop matters, or the specification calls for it by default. Choose SR when: physical space is tight (equipment skids, marine engine rooms), or the line is short and low-velocity. When in doubt, LR – it is the safer engineering choice and costs little more.

Ordering & Custom Options

Standard elbows ship from stock in A234 WPB and WP304/316. Non-standard requirements – extra-heavy walls, 3D bends, special angles, clad fittings – are manufactured to your drawing in 15-30 days. Every elbow ships size- and heat-stamped with EN 10204 3.1 certificates. Send your size, schedule and material for a fast quote.

FAQs

What is the radius of a long radius 90° elbow? 1.5 times nominal pipe size (a 4″ LR elbow has a 6″ centerline radius). Short radius is 1 x NPS.

Do you supply 90° elbows in stainless steel? Yes – A403 WP304/304L/316/316L seamless and welded, SCH10-SCH80 standard schedules.
