1. Product Overview
180° pipe elbows (also called return bends) are U-shaped pipe fittings designed to reverse fluid flow direction by 180° in piping circuits, commonly used for heat exchangers, tank circulation and compact pipeline layout.
2. Main Classification
- Long Radius 180° Elbow (LR, R=1.5D):Most popular, low flow resistance, standard engineering option
- Short Radius 180° Elbow (SR, R=1D):Compact size for narrow installation space
3. Executive Standards
- ASME B16.9
- EN 10253
- GB/T 12459, GB/T 13401
- MSS SP-75
4. Available Materials
- Carbon steel: A234 WPB, P245GH, Q235B
- Stainless steel: A403 WP304, WP316L

Applications of 180 Degree Elbows (Return Bends)
A 180° elbow (return bend) reverses flow direction completely: heater and furnace passes where fluid runs back through the tube bank, heat exchanger circuits, U-tube bundles, and recirculation loops. Using one 180° return instead of two 90° elbows plus a spool removes two welds from the system – fewer leak points, faster installation, smoother flow.
Available Configurations
ASME B16.9 defines two 180° configurations: long radius (center-to-center = 2 x 1.5D) for standard process service, and short radius (center-to-center = 2 x 1D) for tight heater and exchanger layouts. Both available seamless and welded, in A234 WPB, A420 WPL6 and A403 stainless grades, SCH10-SCH160.

FAQs
What is the difference between a 180° elbow and a return bend? They are the same fitting – “return bend” is the common trade name for the 180° elbow.
Can 180° elbows be made in duplex stainless? Yes, on request – send the grade (e.g. UNS S31803/S32205) and quantity for a manufacturing review.
