Pipe tee and reducer fittings solve different problems in a piping system. A pipe tee creates a branch connection, while a reducer connects pipes of different diameters. Understanding the difference helps buyers prepare accurate purchase lists and avoid installation mismatches.
What a pipe tee does
A pipe tee divides or combines flow through a branch outlet. Equal tees have the same diameter on all three openings. Reducing tees connect a smaller branch to a larger run pipe.
What a reducer does
A pipe reducer changes the pipe diameter in a straight line. Concentric reducers keep the centerline aligned, while eccentric reducers are often used when drainage, pump suction or top/bottom alignment matters.
How to choose
Use a tee when a branch line is needed. Use a reducer when the pipeline size changes from one diameter to another. For complex systems, both fittings may appear close together in the same drawing.
